Guillain, Simon
(1581-1658)
   sculptor, engraver
Born in Paris, Simon Guillain studied with his father, Nicolas Guillain (known as "Cambray"), and traveled to Rome, where he also studied architecture and engraving. on his return to Paris in 1612, he produced decorative works for several churches (Saint-Eustache, Saint-Germain, les Carmes) and was a founding member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture (1642). In his major works, the bronze monument at the Port-au-Change (1647, louvre), representing louis x III, anne of Austria, and the young louis XIV, Guillain showed a taste for realistic detail, as well as a sense of effect and an expressive, somewhat baroque, spirit.
